Hunting in the Central Highlands Tasmania

Highland fallow, trout waters and big sky moor country

Tasmania's Central Highlands lift the Midlands formula a thousand metres: fallow deer working the margins of highland grazing runs, button-grass moors and snow gum woodland, with the island's legendary trout lakes threaded between. A frosted morning stalk here, croak echoing off the tiers, is Tasmanian hunting at its finest.

Highland fallow are the same herd lineage as the Midlands deer but they live harder. Bucks range wider, hold in bigger cover and test your glassing across country where the weather can turn in an hour. Expect more walking for your opportunities, and value them more when they come.

The great highland double is deer and trout. The back end of the trout season overlaps the buck season, and many properties border lakes or hold private water, so a morning stalk and an evening rise on the same day is a genuine plan, not a fantasy.

Terrain

High plateau country: button-grass plains, snow gum and cider gum woodland, glacial tarns and the great hydro lakes. Cold, with snow possible in any month.

Seasons & timing

Fallow under Tasmania's licence and tag system: the antlered buck season runs late February into early April, and the antlerless season runs February to October. The highland croak runs slightly later than the lowlands, with late March to early April the peak.

Licences & access

A Tasmanian hunting licence and tags for deer, your firearms licence and booked landholder permission. Weather is the real gatekeeper: pack quality layers for four seasons regardless of the forecast.

Central Highlands Tasmania hunting: common questions

Can I combine trout fishing with a highlands hunt?

It is the classic Tasmanian double. The deer seasons overlap the back end of the trout season, and many properties border lakes or hold private water. Check each listing's fishing notes and bring the fly rod.

How cold does highland hunting get?

Genuinely cold. Hard frosts run through autumn, and snow is possible in any month of the year. Quality layering, gloves and a warm glassing jacket are essential kit, not luxuries.

Are highland fallow different from Midlands deer?

Same herd lineage, harder country. Highland bucks range wider and hold in bigger cover, so expect more walking and more glassing for your opportunities. The reward is hunting remarkable country with almost no pressure.
