Hunting in the Central Queensland

Brigalow pigs, expanding red deer and endless station country

The brigalow belt and Fitzroy basin of Central Queensland carry some of the heaviest pig populations in Australia. Grain crops, buffel pasture and mile after mile of seasonal creek make this pig hunting country without peer, while red deer push through the ranges and goats hold the rougher gorge country.

Pig hunting here has a rhythm built around water and feed. Walk the creek systems at first light for pigs shading up after a night on the crops, glass the sorghum and wheat edges at dusk as mobs move out to feed, and check the fresh rooting on the buffel flats to pattern where they will be tomorrow.

Grain growers and cattle producers fight pigs every planting season, and hunters who book stays are welcomed as genuine pest management. Biosecurity is taken seriously on cropping country, so expect boot and vehicle wash-down rules and follow them exactly; they protect the farm and your future access.

Terrain

Brigalow and softwood scrub, buffel grass downs, sorghum and wheat country, sandstone gorge fringes and big seasonal creek systems in the Fitzroy catchment.

Seasons & timing

Year round, with no Queensland hunting licence needed. Winter from May to September is comfortable and pigs pattern hard onto crops and water. Summer hunts run dawn and dusk around the heat.

Licences & access

A weapons licence plus booked landholder permission is the full requirement. Grain biosecurity matters: clean boots, clean vehicles and strict adherence to your host's wash-down rules.

Central Queensland hunting: common questions

How do I find pigs on a big Central Queensland property?

Water and feed. Walk the creek systems early, glass the crop edges at dusk and look for fresh rooting on the buffel flats. Hosts usually know exactly which waterhole or crop the mob is using in any given week and will start you there.

Can I bring dogs for pig hunting in Central Queensland?

Only if the individual listing allows it. It is always the landholder's call, and many cattle and grain properties prohibit dogs entirely. Check the property rules or message the host before booking if dogs matter to your hunt.

Is there deer hunting in Central Queensland?

Yes. Red deer are established and expanding through the ranges, and chital are spreading south from the Burdekin. It is pig country first, but the deer bonus is real and improving every season.
