About this location

Tanjil State Forest, near Erica in the Victorian High Country, is a major block of public land covering about 31,398 hectares, free to hunt for licensed hunters under Victoria's public land hunting rules and shown on the GMA More to Explore map. Sambar, fallow, red and hog deer are hunted by stalking or with hounds during the hound season, with hog deer taken in April under tags. Ducks can be hunted in season with a Waterfowl Identification Test, quail in season, and foxes, rabbits, hares, feral pigs and feral goats year round. A Game Licence is required, and the forest is shared with a grazing licence in parts. Check the More to Explore map for current boundaries, seasons and closures before travelling.

Access and requirements

A current Victorian Game Licence with the right endorsements, plus your firearms licence.
Deer hunting is permitted, by stalking, with hounds in the hound season where endorsed, with gundogs and deer hunting dogs allowed.
Hog deer in the April season only, with tags and compulsory checking.
Duck in the declared season only, with a Waterfowl Identification Test, non-toxic shot and gundogs limited to flushing and retrieval.
Stubble quail in the declared season only.
Declared pest animals (rabbits, foxes, pigs and goats) may be taken all year.
Parts of this area carry a grazing licence. Respect stock, gates and any licensee signage; some sections can only be hunted with the licensee's permission, so check the More to Explore map zones carefully.
