Hunting in the Hunter & Central Coast

Fallow, red and rusa deer within a couple of hours of Sydney

The Hunter Valley and the Central Coast are the closest serious deer country to Sydney and Newcastle. Fallow deer are the most common deer through the Hunter's grazing country, red deer have established in the Upper Hunter toward the Golden Highway, and rusa deer work the coastal fringe north into the Mid Coast. Pigs, foxes and rabbits round out the bag.

The country runs from vineyards and dairy flats on the Hunter River, up through cattle runs around Singleton, Muswellbrook and Scone, to the timbered ranges of the Barrington and Watagan fringes. Toward the coast it gives way to closely settled small farms and bushland behind Gosford and Wyong, where landholders deal with deer and foxes on their doorstep.

Being so close to the cities, this is also where a lot of hunters learn their craft. Guided hunts, field courses and skills workshops run within an easy drive of Sydney, and Local Land Services encourages landholders to keep deer numbers in check, so capable, respectful hunters are genuinely welcome on private land.

Terrain

Hunter River flats and rolling cattle country rising to timbered ranges on the Barrington and Watagan fringes, with coastal bushland, wetlands and small farms behind the Central Coast.

Seasons & timing

Deer are huntable on private land year round in NSW. The fallow croak and red roar run through autumn, peaking in April, while rusa rut through winter from June into August. Foxes, rabbits and pigs are fair game in every month.

Licences & access

A current NSW firearms licence and landholder permission, provided in writing by your booking. Deer are feral animals in NSW, so no game licence applies on private land. Closer to town, blocks are smaller and neighbours closer, so hosts set firm rules on safe shooting directions and some properties are bow only.

Hunter & Central Coast hunting: common questions

What deer can I hunt in the Hunter Valley?

Fallow deer are the most common through the Hunter, red deer have established in the Upper Hunter, and rusa deer occur along the coastal fringe. Each listing states the species actually on the property, so pick by species rather than by region alone.

How far is the Hunter from Sydney?

The lower Hunter and the Central Coast are around one to two hours north of Sydney, and the Upper Hunter around three. That makes a day trip or a long weekend hunt genuinely practical.

Do I need a hunting licence on private land in the Hunter?

No. NSW reclassified deer as feral animals in 2019 and removed the game licence requirement on private property. You need a current NSW firearms licence and the landholder's written permission, which your booking provides. Bowhunters need no firearms licence at all.

Are there hunting courses near the Central Coast?

Yes. Being so close to Sydney and Newcastle, the region suits guided hunts, field skills courses and workshops as much as farm stays. Browse the experiences listed in the region to find one that runs near you.
