Hunting in the South East Queensland

The Brisbane and Mary Valley red deer roar, close to the city

The Brisbane Valley and Mary Valley hold Australia's oldest red deer herd, descended from six deer gifted by Queen Victoria and released at Cressbrook Station in 1873. Every autumn the valleys ring with roaring stags, and the surrounding scrub country carries pigs plus expanding fallow and rusa populations.

This is the most accessible serious deer hunting in Queensland. Most properties sit within two hours of Brisbane, which makes weekend hunts genuinely practical: arrive Friday night, hunt two dawns and be home for Sunday dinner. During the roar in late March and April, that convenience meets world-class calling action.

Blocks here are smaller than the western stations, so boundary awareness and safe shot direction matter, and hosts provide property maps and briefings. In return you get closer, more intimate hunting: stags roaring across a valley you can walk in an hour, and the chance to call a mature red into fifty metres.

Terrain

Cleared grazing valleys and steep ironbark and hoop pine ridge country through the Brisbane, Stanley and Mary river catchments.

Seasons & timing

Year round on private land, with no Queensland hunting licence. The roar, late March through April, is the marquee event and books out well ahead. Winter offers clear, cool glassing weather.

Licences & access

A weapons licence and booked landholder permission cover the requirements. Expect map briefings and marked boundaries, since properties are closer-settled than the west.

South East Queensland hunting: common questions

When exactly is the red deer roar in South East Queensland?

Typically the last week of March through late April, peaking in early to mid April depending on the season. Stags roar hardest at dawn and dusk in cool, still weather, and calling is most effective at the peak.

Can I hunt South East Queensland on a weekend trip from Brisbane?

Absolutely. Most Brisbane and Mary Valley properties are one to two hours from the city, so a Friday evening arrival gives you two full dawn sessions before the drive home. It is the most practical serious deer hunting in Queensland.

How competitive is booking during the roar?

Very. Roar-week dates on good valley properties sell out months in advance. Lock your dates early, or consider the quieter but still productive May and June period when stags are recovering and feeding hard.
